Anybody know how to change the ring cadence for internal and external calls?

I have a customer who wants the normal single ring that you would get on a Norstar or BCM to ring for external calls and the double interrupted one that you would normally get for external calls to be used for internal calls.

The UCx takes the ringing cadences off the Nortel Meridian One and CS1000 platform, plus this brings the system more in alignment with other systems on the Market such as Cisco and Avaya, which all have a single ring for internal calls.

I don't believe there is a way to actually change the cadences.

Looking through the programming I can't find anywhere to change the cadence, only the ring style.

This customer swears that their old Norstar worked that way but I don't how to do it in a Norstar either. From my experience, you should get a single ring on an internal call and a double interrupted on an external.

Hey telcodog,

Glad you are liking the UCx by the way.

The ring cadence is hard coded into the system. I know the UCx folks played around with the cadences and originally had the double ring for internal, but it wasn't a true double ring. It was the one short, one long ring similar to the Meridian 1/CS1K, so it sounded a bit odd for internal calls.

I convinced them to switch it around so that it matches the cadences from CS1K. I know it's hard for the Norstar customer to get used to it, BUT, over a matter of a few days of the phones ringing the new way, I would likely guess they will adjust.

If it's completely necessary for their system, I'd suggest contacting the E-Metrotel team to see if they can do something different on their system.

Thanks,

Joe

We have exposed these settings through the Other Nortel Settings field.
We will implement this through he GUI interface at a later date

To get Norstar/BCM like ring cadences, do the following:
1. Make sure that your UCx system is updated to the latest software release available from the online repository (important!!!)
2. Go to PBX – PBX Configuration – Nortel Settings
3. Locate “Other Nortel Settings” (close to the bottom of the page) and add the following entry:
cadences = 102
4. Submit the changes and apply the configuration

For inquiring minds that want to know more about this topic, here is the scoop.

UCx uses three ring cadences for Nortel phones:
0 – solid ring (2 seconds on)
1 – short/long ring (0.5 on, 0.3 off, 1.2 on)
2 – medium/medium ring (0.7 on, 0.5 off, 0.7 on)

These cadences are used for three alert types:
A - internal calls
B - DID calls
C - ringing BLF

The default configuration is
Alert type A - cadence 0
Alert type B - cadence 1
Alert type C - cadence 2

The "cadences" entry configures cadences for the three alert types (the first character is the cadence for type A, the second character is the cadence for type B, the third character is the cadence for type C). For example, the configuration string for the default cadences would be "012".

On Norstar/BCM, the cadence 2 (medium/medium ring) is used for internal calls and cadence 0 (solid ring) is used for external calls. Thus, to get the Norstar/BCM like ringing, the "cadences" entry must be set to 201 (the short/long ring cadence 1 will be used for ringing BLF).

Based on the description, the entry listed under step 3 should be cadences = 201 instead of 102!

You guys are the best!

Just try getting that kind of response out of Avaya!

Thanks Patrick.
