I'm trying to understand something that makes no sense. We're running a Netware 4 server with windows 98/2000 clients. On a few of the 98 clients, people seem to lose their rights to directories. If I load up nwadmin, their rights have not changed, but the directory which they could save to before now says they don't have access. I end up giving them ALL permissions to the drive to get it to work after that, and sometimes THAT doesn't work. Can anyone help, or offer a suggestion? Thanks.

Ted

This is most likely a Client Software problem. What version are you running?

Service pack is a good idea. I already have v3.32 downloaded and installed on most pc's. Just not sure if it's on the ones that are having the problems. My particular pc is still 3.30 =)

Thanks for the suggestions.

What Service Pack are you running on your server? -----------------------------------------------------

Remind me how to check the service pack. I seem to remember that it's sp7, not 100% sure. Also a question for ya TheLad, our resident genius.

I need to put the newest patches and or service pack on this netware 4 server because i'm going to do a migration to a netware 6 over the network. As far as I remember, I think you're required to install the service pack and/or patches to the sys volume. My question is if there is any way around this. The person who installed this server made a REALLY small sys volume, and it's the reason we've never updated the service pack before. I need to know guys if there's a work around for that. Thanks again.

You cannot install the Service Pack elsewhere as the files it backs up and overwrites are on SYS. If you have any unallocated diskspace you can add this to SYS, also if possible see if you can add another disk as the migration to NetWare 6 will usually require at least 1Gb free on the SYS volume anyway. -----------------------------------------------------

Ok how do you check service pack version again?

And I just ordered a hot-swappable 18gb drive for that machine. How can I add that to the sys volume since you said I can add unallocated diskspace? Thanks.

Ted

You should be able to tell the Service Pack under INSTALL / Product Options or something like that (sorry, no NetWare 4.x servers onsite).

As for the other disk, what type of server do you have? You should be able to put the disk in, add it to the RAID/Logical volume configuration, create an additional NetWare partition, then add however many Gig to SYS you think you need (don't add it all!) -----------------------------------------------------

Have you run a DSREPAIR lately? If not, please do so. That may clear up your rights issues.

Good Luck!

I could be completely ofbase here but have you checked that the directory isn't being deleted and recreated by someone. I have seen something similar where a directory is H:\DIRA\DIRB and users have read/write access to ..\DIRB. UserX has read/write access to \DIRA and accidentally dragged the ..\DIRB directory somewhere other users don't have rights to using Windows Explorer. Userx notices the mistake and drags it back and voila, no rights for the other users. At least, I think thats how it went.

If they moved those folders even for a minute we would have noticed a problem, so therefore i'm pretty sure they were untouched. Thanks though =)
