I have a user on a Win95b WS accessing files on a 5.0 server who is getting a strange permission error. If she takes a file on the server (FILE A) and does a "save as" to a different name (FILE B) there are no problems. BUT, if she makes a change to this file (FILE B) and tries to save it (FILE B) she gets the following error, "There has been a network or file permission error. The network connection may be lost. (\\PathToFileName)" Now here's the strange part, if she clicks to retry the save to the same file name (FILE B) it'll work. She can duplicate this error every time. She has RWCEMF rights to this folder. Anybody have any ideas on how to get the save to work the first time?

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

One more thing. If I go into NWAdmin32 and right-click on the folder, click on "details", and click on "facts" I get the following error message, "the object assigned as the owner of this directory no longer exists. You may need to run DSREPAIR.NLM on yor server to clean up obsolete objects IDs." There have been no changes to the server for over a year. The only thing done on the WS was to add a networked copier to her printers about two weeks ago. And where do I find DSREPAIR.NLM? I tried to run it but the file coulnd't be found (and yeah I tried to run it after I... hmmm... it was either umount or dismount on the volumes. I'm not a Novell guy).

I'm baffled!

No, I'm Joe Brouillette

Regarding the error message... "the object assigned as the owner of this directory no longer exists. You may need to run DSREPAIR.NLM on yor server to clean up obsolete objects IDs."...

This means that the person who created this Directory no longer exists and most probably has been deleted.(I take it the Network Admin has recently left?)

From the NetWare Server Console Prompt, type DSREPAIR.
Choose "Unattended Full Repair"

That should do it.

Salserocito, the person who's position I took over left about 18 months ago. Also, if I type DSREPAIR and hit enter I get an error message stating "file not found" or something like that (the server is running at this time and I'm unable to dismount volumes to confirm the wording). Is DSREPAIR a utility that I need to download? I suppose I could look on the Novell site for it.

Thanks,

Joe Brouillette

You don't need to download DSREPAIR. It is on the file server. You need to walk to the file server and run it on the System Console screen. You will see a menu come up and you should select Unattended system repair. You do not need to dismount any voulmes, you are attempting to correct a problem you have with your NDS and it has nothing to do with the volumes directly.

Sure enough! I was under the impression I had to dismount the volumes, but when I went in and tried it with everything up and running it worked like a charm.

Thanks everybody,

Joe Brouillette

She has already gone home for the weekend, so I sent her an e-mail asking her to check and see if her "problem" was fixed. I'll let you know what she tells me.

Thanks again,

Joe Brouillette
