Why is it that when I use the RH8 Name Server configuratino tool to create DNS records, the DNS server never works?
The name don't resolve at all.

If I take the EXACT same generated configuration and manually edit the named.conf and zone files, it works?

Also, I can't get DHCP to work. Any clues?

It sounds like you need to hit the man pages and howtos.
That's the way linux sysadmins generally tend to do it.

If you are interested in a configuration tool with
a gui and some decent functionality you could check out webmin.

I've created the DHCP scope exactly the way the MAN pages state, service runs fine but no clients grab an IP address.
NIC is set to multicast. There is no tool to configure DHCP out of the box. I usually edit config files anyway but to teach a small business how to keep their server running, the tools provided out of the box need to work.

I'm fine with Linux the way it is but this DNS stuff is exactly why a MS shop won't even play with it if the tools don't work properly.

vi is the only configuration tool you should need. :)

agreed though on the redhat tool - i tried it once and it didn't work. luckily i have a small zone and edited everything by hand.

otherwise webmin works extremely well and would use that.
