When the backup starts the server locks up. This is the last entries in the messages file:

Sep 10 01:05:02 gardener kernel: hdb: attached ide-tape driver.
Sep 10 01:05:02 gardener kernel: ide-tape: hdb <-> ht0: Seagate STT20000A rev 8A
51
Sep 10 01:05:02 gardener kernel: ide-tape: hdb <-> ht0: 1000KBps, 6*54kB buffer,
9720kB pipeline, 110ms tDSC, DMA

This has happened once before...but quit after I upgraded the kernel.

Redhat 8.0 kernel 2.4.20-18.8

Any suggestions?

Have you tried

mt -f /dev/ht0 erase

to see if it can even do that? If it can't, maybe bad tape/drive. There was a diagnostics disk that came with that 20gb Seagate, but don't know if it has a Linux program.
