I've got a RedHat 7.2 system here which has crashed several times in the past month. It appears that the crashes happen when the backup scripts (cron-ed bash scripts which tar different parts of the file system to another computer on the network. Occasionally, this will cause the system to be inaccessible from the network (web, database and samba services are all inaccessible). We are able to shut down the system properly, except we'll get some [FAILED] messages saying that the connection to //STORAGE1 (the computer which houses the backup files) can't be shut down. It eventually does shut down, but when we try to boot it back up, it hangs at the line

Code:
Bringing up interface lo:

Any ideas as to what is going on and how it can be prevented, or do I need to just switch to something more stable, like Windows 3.1. :b

Frankly, if you are having those kinds of unrelated network problems (loopback and remote are quite distinct), I would question if perhaps your NIC is stable or wiring is OK. The next thing that RH loads after 'lo' is the ethernet nics, so it's possible that the nic is hanging... this would explain problems trying to shutdown or hung network sessions...

This can also point to failing RAM, loose NIC, poor kharma or bad diet as well. Eliminate a few culprits and keep us posted.

Well, while swapping out the NIC, we discovered that the back of the computer felt quite a bit hotter than it should have been. We turned it back on, and sure enough the fan on the power supply wasn't working.

Our hardware guy's going to be taking a look at it over the weekend. We'll see how that goes.

Well, the thing has a new power supply and a new NIC, but it's still hanging at the same line.

Code:
Bringing up interface lo:

The NIC could have been cooked by the heat. Try swapping it for an identical make of card.

Can you move the NIC to another PCI slot? Also, why don't you try downloading the KNOPPIX distribution - which is a CD-based bootable distro - and see if it finds a problem dealing with the NIC and/or 'lo'.

Yo ucan find Knoppix here... It doesn't write anything to your hard drive, which makes it an excellent swiss army knife to deal with issues such as this.

Knoppix will, IIRC, attempt to enable the networking services using DHCP. This may be a bit off-base for your network, but if it can get the NIC working or not is really the question at hand.
