I have been investigating how Oracle handles revision control, and have some concerns about whether or not it supports Wave Precision's definition of revision control.

It appears that oracle rev control is very oriented around rev levels of bills and routings, not the rev level on the item master.

For example, when you create a job in Oracle, you specify the revision of the bill and the revision of the routing that apply.

In our business, rev level changes are frequently associated with a customer drawing, which in turn is associated with the item master record. A new rev may be a change to a tolerance or dimension, and may not affect the BOM or routing at all. That is, our revs tend to be item master related, rather than BOM or routing related.

Oracle appears to carry a rev level on the item master record, as well as on the bill and the routing records, but there is no apparent way to specify the rev level of the item when creating a job -- it all seems bill and routing related. Oracle supports inventory control by rev level. However, it is not yet clear to me how the user is supposed to know what rev level of the item he is transacting into inventory, since the item rev level is not specified on the job.
