I've never worked with Domain Controllers so please bear with me...

I have a W2003 server that was initially set up as a Domain Controller but is not being used as such. All I want to do is remove the DC and change it back to a standard server. I'm also having to do this remotely. What traps and pitfalls am do I need to watch out for when I demote this machine?

Also, there are no other DC's in the mix.

All your suggestions and ideas are always appreciated.

dcpromo to demote it. But then there will be no domain. Why not leave it?

If there are no other DCs, then demoting this one will delete your AD domain. ANYTHING domain related will no longer work.

Plan for performance, and capacity takes care of itself. Plan for capacity, and suffer poor performance.

The server was never meant to be a domain - just a file server. There's just 2 other PC's using the server and AD is overkill for it's use. And, the server will better use the resources currently being domain services.

Thanks for your ideas & suggestions.
