Hi I'm currently been working on spreads sheets to work out sale price so it looks a little like this

Cost price £100 = CP
Sale price is 131% mark up = MU
So CP*1.31 = MU (£131.00)

Final sale price is CP + MU = SP (£231.00)

Now I've been asked to reverse the spread sheet to get back to the original cost price how can I do this I've tried
SP / 1.31 but it's not getting me back to CP

Hi aph,

Cost Price = Sale Price/(1 + Markup %)

Cheers

Cheers for the info macropod but how would I enter it in excel as I don't seem to get the correct results :-(

here's is the sum

=SUM(B10/1+C12)
B10 being sale price C12 being the % written as a decimal EG 1.31 (I've also tried 131) I'm obviously going wrong some where?

You would translate macropod's formula to
=B10/(1+C12) where B10 is 231 and C10 is 1.31

got it :)
=SUM(B10)/(1+C12)

B10 Total Sale price C12 percentage as a decimal, it's all in the brackets!
Big help macropod!! (Ive got 1000's of prices to rework!!!)

Cheers xlhelp I posted as you did :)

I suggest lose the SUM part, it doesn't do anything and it can only get you into trouble oftentimes. Don't use SUM unless it's absolutely necessary for your calcs.
