I've redrawn an "A" from a imported photo, but when I go to make a compound path of it, it won't make a hole. And I can't reverse the path directions of the hole and outside A because when I select a path (with any of the selection tools) in the Attributes box the Reverse Path Direction buttons are greyed out. How come?

...have you selected 'non zero winding fill rule' in the attribute palette?

...this is the left icon of the pair on the right hand side below overprint stroke...

...to change a hole in a compound path to a filled area:

...make sure that the compound path uses the nonzero winding fill rule.

...with the Direct Selection tool, select the part of the compound path to reverse. ...do not select the entire compound path.

...in the Attributes palette, click the Reverse Path Direction Off button or the Reverse Path Direction On button.
