Hopefully a simple question: is there an NT tool for looking up the domain name from an IP address? :) Hope that this helped! :)

Thanks for the help. I tried this and got the message "cannot find server name for address 127.0.0.1"
It's looking for 127.0.0.1:DNS according to ZoneAlarm. I guess this is because I have no DNS server in my little network. I know the address CIS (I surf through Compuserve) uses for DNS lookups, can I put this in my TCP/IP settings or would this bring problems addressing machines on my network (I suppose it all goes over Netbios at the moment)? Would that be the solution to the problem? :) Hope that this helped! :)

another easy way is to do a
ping -a aaa.bbb.ccc.ddd
this will show you the name of the ip before the host is pinged.

Hi chris13,

Thanks, I tried that; it works internally on out network at work, but when I enter it in our firewall it just comes back like ping without the -a option. Here we're connected to a DNS server via our provider. But then I think at home I must be connected to one as well or IE wouldn't be able to resolve addresses. Yeah, I'm not much of a network specialist. What role does the DNS address in the TCP/IP protocol settings actually play? BTW, I want to find out who these guys are who keep trying to contact my machine at home, according to ZoneAlarm...(although they're maybe well hidden, but who knows?) :) Hope that this helped! :)

Thanks chris, it works at home, anyway:) :) Hope that this helped! :)
