Reverse DNS Problem

Hi,

We are not able to send email to our AOL cutomers because there appears to be something wrong with our reverse DNS.
Our reverse DNS fails. DNS is returning the wrong FQDN.

When I query from the internet for our Exchange server's IP I get the wrong FQDN of the server.
I get eastern-exch.easternnational.org. It should be en-exch.easternnational.org.

We host our own DNS server on the internet and we use one of AT&T's DNS server for queries.

I checked all our Host and PTR records and none of them are for eastern-exch. They are setup for en-exch.

Shouldn't this have been updated? There is no record for this at the registrar either.

Any ideas would be very helpful!

Thanks,
Vince

Non-authoritative answer:
155.220.111.12.in-addr.arpa canonical name = 155.144/28.220.111.12.in-addr.arpa.
155.144/28.220.111.12.in-addr.arpa name = eastern-exch.easternnational.org.

Your ISP is usually responsible for PTR records.

Hi Pat,

Thanks for trying to help out.

We have our own DNS server on the internet called NS1. We also use one of AT&Ts DNS servers. I used a Reverse DNS tool from DNSStuff.com. The last server to report an answer for the FQDN of our Exchange server was the AT&T DNS server.

I believe someone before me might have added a PTR and A records from an AT&T DNS tool, but I'm not sure. I haven't been able to find anything like this on the AT&T site. Even if I did, I don't have access info to change it.

What confuses me is this- if we have the AT&T DNS server setup as one of our Name Server records, wouldn't they update one another?

Thanks,

Vince

No - your system can't possibly update someone elses. You'd need to contact AT&T to have any changes made.

I called AT&T support and the prompt actually had a DNS support dept. They checked out my info and said all I had to do is increment my serial number by 1 on my internet facing DNS server. It can be changed on the SOA record prperties. This will update the DNS at AT&T.

We'll see if this works or not in a day or so.

Thanks again,

Vince
