I have a Maxtor hard-drive 8.5 gig is giving a tapping noise lately. I removed it from this PC and tried to copy the files on a diferent PC in a slave position and I still cannot see the drive. I have some important date in this drive. Can anyone help how to retrieve this data? Thanking you in advance.

if the hd is not recognized by bios/os you´r doomed.
you could try to find same hd (also same firmware version) and exchange the controller card (but with the noise you mentioned it´s more likly that the head´s are gone so that would not help) or you send it to a professionel recovery store, but that´s quite expensive.

the only other option is to keep trying to get it to recognize as a slave drive. try going to Maxtor and look for some disk utilites. It may be able to temp get your drive up long enough to get the data off. but, the clicking noise usually is a physical hardware failure in the drive.

Go into CMOS/BIOS setup (DEL key on most PCs, F10 on Compaqs) at bootup and set the parameter of the drive to auto...that is, if it's a slave on the secondary IDE channel, set it to that in setup. That way, the BIOS will have choices with which to use to recognize a drive installed. If there is still no recognition, then you have to decide how much that important data is worth.
