Retrieving data after format

I have a friend whos son formatted the hard drive of their computer while he was mid way through writing his report cards. Is there anyway to retrieve the data on the hdd. They are running win98, and he has already started writing back on the hard drive. Anything we can do?

Short answer, no. If, straight after the format, before any more data was written to the drive, Nortons Unfromat (or similar) could have recovered data. But with new data on the drive now, a full recovery is virtually impossible.
A data recovery agency would have more success but at great cost.
