Retrieve Substring

Hi have created a website running on MySQL and have a description field in one of that tables. I would like to display, say the first 100 words from this field with a linked more button allowing you to go and view the rest. Can anyone tell me if this is possible in SQL or do i require to bring the whole field back?

You can fetch just a substring.


SELECT substring(columnname, 1, 100).....
