Help! Help! Help... Please?

For some entirely inexplicable reason the excel 2000 spreadsheet which contains all the work I need for a presentation has become corrupt and is throwing up a Dr Watson error (access violation?)... is there any way to recover any of the workbooks without having to open the file? (I need to recover the formulas not just the data...)

Thanks

Two options if you want formulas:-

1) Try opening it in Excel 2002 which will detect and repair a lot of corrupted workbooks.

2) Try opening it with OpenOffice, available free from where else but This will open Excel files that not even Excel can open - Go Figure. It's a 50MB download though, so only to be tried with broadband really.

Lastly you could, if the file is not too big, send me the file and I will happily give it a go for you with my copy of XL 2002. ken . wright at ntlworld . com
If it doesn't work it might even prompt me into downloading OpenOffice myself ( Keep meaning to do it :-> )

You cannot extract formulas without opening the file, so despite the fact that you could possibly get the raw data out by using a blank spreadsheet and putting in full filepath references to the sheets/cells in your closed book, it will not return any formulas or VBA code.

Sometimes it's possible to open Excel files from Word. May be sheets which you need - are good and you can write it one by one

OP sent file privately and it was repaired by XL2002. he did in fact manage to open it with OpenOffice as suggested, but apparently the range names were not preserved.
