Hi all,
We are installing DC on win 2000 server and changing the 15 computer network from WorkGroup to Client/Server. I could retrieve the user settings on XP Pro workstation and have the same settings while logged on to network.

How do I use the current user profiles on Win 98/95 workstations when I change the network from Workgroup to Client/Server. this lets the users not loose any outlook data and any programs installed previously. This is very important prior to changing the whole network from Workgroup to Client/Server.

Thanks
PPC2K.

PPC2K,

If I understand you correctly, you can institute Roaming Profiles within the Domain and then just copy the users current profiles to the network share where you want to store the new Roaming Profiles. For example,

1. Create a network share called Profiles - with Share level permissions that allow everyone access.
2. Create your users on the Domain Controller within A/D Users and Computers.
3. On the Profiles tab of the users Properties sheet, enter the path to the network share named Profiles, i.e.,
\\ServerName\Profiles\%username% (If you have alot of users to create you may want to create a template...)
4. Copy the users current profiles to the network share named Profiles (you'll need to make a sub folder for each user within the Profiles folder. Normally Windows would do this for you the first time each use loged into the domain, but since you want to establish their profiles for them before they log on the first time, you will need to create the sub folder). -- make sure to give each user FC permission to their own folder and take out the Everyone group --

Now when your users logon to the Domain with their new Domain accounts, they will receive their profile from the network share.

Hope this helps,

Patty

Patty,
Thanks for the reply. How do I copy the user profiles from Win 98/95 and Me computers. Please give the location of where they are stored. For XP, I know they are in Documents & Settings/<UserName>. So, I could do that. But, before I try doing on 98 computers, I want to make sure its exact path.

Thanks,
ppc2k

PPC2K,

Profiles for ME are stored in C:\Windows\Profiles...I don't have a machine here with 98 or 95 so I am unsure about them.

Once you locate the users profile all you have to do is EDIT, SELECT ALL, and then cut and copy to network storage location (right into the users individual folder within the Profiles folder).

Hope this helps,

Patty [ponytails2]
