Retiring NIS server

We have a NIS server (AIX 4.3 Machine) with 8 NIS clients (some 4.3 and some 5.2) attached to it. We want to retire the NIS server. How can we change the user accounts on the clients from using the NIS server and convert them to local accounts? With NIS + is very easy, but we are struggling with the old NIS. Is there a quick and painless way to do this?
