I am sorting through the output of the bpdbjobs command and have seen both retention units and retention period. They both are a number like 1 or 3. Which one is the actual retention value that can be matched with a length from the bpretlevel command. It seems logical that it would be the retention period but judging by the number this doesn't seem correct.

Thanks

Sometimes the easiest way to get an answer is to do a short test. Create a new retention period of 7 months for retention period 8 (or whatever is available for changing) and run a test backup using that in a schedule.

BTW: While researching your post I found a hidden retention level of 25 which sets the retention to immediate expire. I'm not sure why it exists but it seems like that would be a good one to use for when running test backups. Kinda like copying to /dev/null except you use a tape. Don't try it until it is found out why it is an undocumented value.
