Hi all,
I'm wondering if someone out there can clear up the issue of retention policy's.
I was told that if you have a retention policy of 14 days 2 cycles EG:

Sat Sun Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri
F1 N/A I1 I2 I3 I4 I5

Sat Sun Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri
F2 N/A I1 I2 I3 I4 I5

Sat Sun Mon Tue Wed Thur Fri
F3 N/A I1 I2 I3 I4 I5

Sat
F4

The prune of F1, I1, I2, I3, I4, I5 wont happen until F4 has sucessfully completed.
When i read the commvault documentation, it says if the data aging process is run after a sucessfull backup of I5 for Wk3 it will prune F1, I1, I2, I3, I4, and I5

Which is correct?

I appreciate any help to try and clarify this

Hi

The first explanation is correct because the data ageing needs to run after F4 to ensure the 2 cycles are met.

A cycle is all jobs between a full and (up to) another full and the retention cycle must be 'EXCEEDED' before it's eligible to be pruned.

So if you were to age the data after Wk3 I5 then you haven't exceeded the Wk1 cycle as F4 hasn't run and therefore WK1 cycle hasn't been exceeded.

The main point to note is 'Exceeded'.

Hope it makes sense ;-)

Hi Briky,
Thanks for the reply. I thought it was this, but the commvault documentation suggestes the second.
I'm currently trying to sort out my company's backup's, so this will help me understand the data aging alot better.

Cheers buddy
