Retain cell format when merging data from Excel to Word 1

I was wondering whether anybody knew if the formatting in an Excel document could be retained when merging the data into a word document. e.g. I have an excel document and in some of the cells, I have used Alt+Enter so that the text is on separate lines. However, when I merge the data into Word, it loses this formatting and replaces it with a space. Any ideas?
