I have a server that was installed with a retail version of Windows Server 2003 Standard Edition. Are there any procedures for changing this to a VLK install? Is there a way to manually change the product key or do I need to re-install Windows and let it 'upgrade' the existing installation?

you can disable the actual key and its activation in order to insert a new key.

To change the product ID

Log in as the local Administrator
Click Start > Run > and type in Regedit
Browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\wpaevents

In the right pane, right-click OOBETimer, and then click Modify
Change at least one digit of this value to deactivate Windows
Click OK and close regedit
Click Start > Run and type in: "%systemroot%\system32\oobe\msoobe.exe /a"
Click Yes, I want to telephone a customer service representative to activate Windows, and then click Next
Click Change Product Key (at the bottom)
Enter your valid Corporate Product Key
Press Update and close the window.
If you are returned to the previous window, click Remind me later
Restart your computer

That might work if you wanted to change from one retail key to another, but I don't think that allows you to change to a different type of licensing.

ADB100 - what's the need to change the licensing type? There are no features or advantages (technically) from doing that.

what's the need to change the licensing type?

The site is covered by a VLK license so this retail version can be given to someone else outside the company.

I assume the only option is to re-install Windows from the VLK CD and let it 'upgrade' the current installation.
