Restricting Access Whilst Computer is Running

I need to keep my computer running at all times in order to remain updated. However, it is in a shared household and I'm concerned people might be able to gain access to it whilst I am out of the house.

Is there a way for me to keep the computer running and accessing the web, but at the same time not allowing access to the desktop or having a password controlled desktop if you know what I mean. Thanks.

Make sure that your account (or the one that needs to be connected all the time) has a password. Then Lock the desktop.
