Restoring User Areas to Different Server

Hi

We had a server failure today, basically the motherboard failed, and were going to be waiting upto a week for a replacement from HP. This is no good as most of our students are just about to start their exams.

We were looking to replace it over the next month or two anyway (during our summer break)

My question is;

I have just gave our veritas backup server a job of restoring nearly 1000 users home areas from the previous day's backup, onto a different server - which i had just finished building and intergrating into the tree.

I am just going to edit the login script for that OU and re-map their home area (h:) from the old server to the new server.

Will this just work ?

or....

How can i re-set the permissions on the home area folders, without going into each folder/user and doing it manually

Is there a function/utility that will set user permissons en mass. the users are all in the same context/organisational unit (.06)

Each login account within that context are all the same format (a seven digit number, which is the students enrollment number taken from our Capita Unit-e MIS System).

Opps, the servers are Netware 5.1 SP8, running Edirectory 8.7.3 i beleive (i am at home so cant remember exact e-directory version).

you just need to edit the ou script.
providing when you have done the restore - you restore the trustees as well - think it defaults on backup exec or it propmps you anyway

the actual home designation in the user details is relatively cosmetic - used for some stuff but mainly roaming profs etc

i always like a having a trustbar as well or a tbackup or suchlike

if you dont have the trustee's - you can very quickly script this - even a crude batch file would do it

Hi Terry,

Thanks for your reply

Just a bit more info for you

All of the accounts that are in the 06 context are all still there.

The only problems i forcee

1) they havent been told that their home area is on a new server - how do i acomplish this

2) they will not have any permissions on thier restored folder - the backup was taken on a windows box that just does backups of the entire drives.

so i need to re-map everyones H:\ to point to their new home area, which im assuming i just do the login script.

But then you have the actual "home directory" section in every users's home area.

I beleive i still have the import files, so i could in theory just re-run that, but use the Update tag (never done this before), obviously getting it to ignore its new password.

I am connected to our lan now via PCAnywhere and hav e just seen that the backup has just finished restoring all the users data onto the new server.

right ive reset all the drive mappings, but it wont map it unless the user is a trustee of their own area

so what i need to do is for 1000 students

{example}

user

9838560.06 make owner of TITAN/USERS:06/9838560
9838562.06 make owner of TITAN/USERS:06/9838562

and learn from this - use netware boxes for everything

windows are for washing and staring out
