I've Been having a nightmare with backup for months now... Finaly Backup Exec 8.5 seemed to be doing a really good job until I tried restoring an individual item into a public folder. I Got loads of service failures etc... I have since been informed that Backup Exec can not restore Public folders unless it is restored to another Exchange Server within your site!

I am considering setting up a standby server for restore purposes could anyone advise what the best method would be? i.e. install into the same site, what name to give it etc... I have only ever worked with one server in one site!!

If anyone has got any better tips for restoring using Backup Exec I would be very happy to hear from you!

Thanks in advance

You could build up another identical server (obviously not connected to the same network) same Organisation etc. , service pack it to the same level as the other server then stop all services , delete the priv.edb and copy the pub.edb to the MDBDATA directory then run 'ISINTEG - patch' from the BIN directory , Start the services - you may need to run the consistency adjuster on the public information store (under server - properties - Advanced)

After this create a mailbox and set relevant permissions on the public folder in question then login via a outlook or whatever client you are using and export the folder as a PST , then import on the other server.

(This assumes you can get access to the old pub.edb)
