I'm trying to restore an Oracle instance to a different server (as a test). Has anyone ever tried this before? What must be in place on the destination server?

The instance I'm trying to load (SID#1) doesn't exist on the destination server, though other SID's do.

Thanks,

Antlers

I believe the instance should exist before you begin the restore. It also must have the same name as the source instance. i.e. If you backup instance ORCL then you must restore to an instance named ORCL.

The Oracle agent must be installed and configured for the instance on the destination machine.

To restore to an alternate machine, you must browse for the server in the Destination screen (when creating the restore job) and depending on what version of BS you are using, select the agent or a destination directory.

The control file will be restored to the agent directory. You need to install the restored control file manually.

There is a DR section in the Oracle agent guide: ftp://ftp.ca.com/pub/brightstor/arcserve/win/v9/docs/BABWOracleAgent.pdf

It explains most of this already.
