Hi all,
I've been using Windows 7 backup, it looks like it makes an image backup and then an incremental backup of the folders I chose such as the Users folders. The backup is going to one of my other drives, all drives are Sata and non-raid.

I have not had a crash, but my aim is to facilitate swapping out my root harddrive, which I like to always keep relatively new.

How would I boot to some semblance of an OS and then restore (presumeably with Windows 7 compatible tools) the backup image to the new sata drive? The only options in the Restore tool are "restore all users files" and "select another backup to restore from". I've stepped as far through those options as I can and can see there is no "Restore windows image to other drive" option, but it's taking an entire image so I would think that this is possible.
Thanks,
--Jim

In backup and restore, in the left panel you will find "create a system repair disk" select that option and burn the cd. Keep this cd. When you boot from the cd, it will ask if you want to repair or restore windows from a previous backup. If you choose the restore from previous backup, it will ask you to locate the backup set, and if you want to restore the whole drive, or selected files/folders. This is how you would restore boot drive.

Thanks rclarke and linney!
I will try this on the weekend and see how it goes, it looks like it's going to work,
