Hi all,

We tried this week-end to upgrade 4.3.3 to ML08. Everything went fine, but when we tried to log on Unix, whatever was the user, we received the message "the DT messaging system can not be started". But everything was ok regarding the TCP/IP and the hostname...so we restored mksysb taken in the morning, and, except some pci/isa filesets error after reconsrtuction, it was OK. The problem is that when logging on with Reflection X, after the XDMCP broadcast, the hostname is now localhost instead of previous one. Can anyone tell me what is the cause of that change, and what could be the consequences ?

Thanks

hi,

is your / filesystem full ?

Which name shows your Welcome panel ?

output of hostname ?

all OK in "smitty mktcpip" ?

duplicated address/hostname in /etc/hosts ?

bye

Hiho,

radical method to restore from a mksysb to solve such a problem hehe. Look at
Error messages and problems

Q: What causes the error "The DT messaging system could not be started." to be displayed when logging into the desktop and what can I do to correct the problem?
A: ToolTalk is unable to establish itself on the network. The system probabley is not correctly configured for the network. Check to see if both the host name and fully qualified network host name are in your system's /etc/hosts file. Also, if the host is not on the network, try "smit mktcpip".

Also for resolving the pci/isa problems after the restore from the mksysb: Some files under /dev will not be automatically restored. The images gives you standard device-files back, but not device-files that have been created later by maybe special-devices. To restore them manually (don't know what the original source of it was, sorry, but works :) ):

Restoring individual files from a mksysb tape
---------------------------------------------
To restore individual files or directories from a mksysb tape, find out the blocksize of the fourth image. To obtain this information, run the following commands:
cd /tmp
tctl -f /dev/rmt# rewind (# to be replaced by a number)
chdev -l rmt# -a block_size=512
restore -s2 -xqdvf /dev/rmt#.1 ./tapeblksz
cat ./tapeblksz

The output that is given is the blocksize to which the tape drive was set when the mksysb was made.

Next, set the blocksize of the tape drive accordingly by running the following command:

chdev -l rmt# -a block_size=[number in the
./tapeblksz file]

Restore the files or directories by running the following commands:

cd / (if the file is to be restored to its original place)
tctl -f /dev/rmt# rewind
restore -s4 -xqdvf /dev/rmt#.1 ./dir/filename (for one file)
OR

restore -s4 -xqdvf /dev/rmt#.1 ./dir (for all files in dir)

Good luck!

Forgot to say, that you should try to connect via telnet (if possible), if connecting via X doesn't work. It's also very helpful to have a serial console, if the logon via the vga monitor at the machine (if you have one), won't work correctly.

hi,

The / is not full (42%)

The welcome shows the correct hostname

output of hostname is OK.

all ok in smitty mktcpip

only one adress/hostname /into etc/hosts

By the way, i had and still have a weird thing in that file : my own workstation is referenced with IP/"servername"loc, and nobody is supposed to have inserted that...

Thanks

Zaxon, I saw the first one on IBM site, but everything was ok regarding the net...

as for connecting that server, everything is working right now. I can do it on both hostname/IP by client, Reflection or telnet...

Weird one, isn't it...

hi,
strange that you can login at DT env if /etc/hosts is not right.

The system does not use this file to know host/IPAD of
himself, but some services use it: DT is one of these.

However, I suggest to:
- Enter in command line login
- "simtty mktcpip" and also if all ok press enter
- edit by vi /etc/hosts, and make it consistent
- errclear 0
- shutdown -Fr

bye

Sorry If I made myself unclear...the hosts file is ok. Everything that should be there is. There's only 1 IP/hostname for the server in question.
