restoring files seems to corrupt them 1

I have a W2K server, running Arcserve 2000 attached to a Cybernetics tape drive. It backups NT - Novell (4.2) and some W2K boxes. And uses the appropiate agents plus open file agent.
Here's the deal. I do a backup. All seems well. It does skip some files, but I'm not worried about that. It does a backup of a directory (Novell). I do a restore of that tape onto the same Novell server, but in a different spot. I go to open the files (*.doc, *.wk4, anything really) and I get a "unrecognized format" error.
Any ideas?

This could be because of the 8.3 dos format used to restore...

check if you have SMS enable during the backups...
