Situation: Working Exchange 5.5 on NT4. Want to disaster recovery test to home lab running Win2k. Also want to do performance testing and a test offline defrag. Usernames on Win2k didn't match for Administrators, but they do now.

Services:
MTA - fails to start. Error 1053. Timed out.
Directory - fails to start. Error 1067. Process terminated unexpectedly.
Info store - fails to start. Error 1053. Timed out.

Restoring data to \\server\Microsoft Exchange Directory . Connection to the restore target has been lost. Operation canceled.

Question - do the SIDs matter or just the account names?

Problem - can't change security permissions on the containers in Exchange cos the services won't start. Can't restore cos can't connect. Catch 22?

Try a redirected restore the Information Store only, not the Directory Store as the directory stores the Sids you mentioned.

given that the old server is still live, what other options do I have to transfer one to the other (separate networks, only modem link between)?

The computer names are the same but the 2k server is domain.local whereas the NT is domain.com.

I don't much care about the 2000 installation as it is my lab PC so I can change it. I'd rather not reload NT4, change the SIDs then upgrade unless it is my only option.
