restoring EDB's

is there a way to recover completely lost edb's? I won't get into why but our backup did not have the edb files and the exchange server data was lost. Fortunatly there was no critical information on the exchange server, but it would be nice to restore the EDB's. I know that log files can be used to rebuild exchange 2000 edb's is there a way to do this in exchange 5.5. The 5.5 server is now on a 2000 server.
