Restored office docs blank or garbled.

After restoring a whole directory of office documents none of the retrieved files are readable. Excel shows the spreadsheets as blank and Word shows garbled text. Has anyone run into this problem before?

We restored with Legato 6.2. The office docs are either 2000 or 97.

This looks weird. If the hardware does not complain already (checksum errors), why would such files open properly at all (why can the application be linked properly?).

Try to recover the files to a different machine. Restoring them on the same computer would not make real sense.

Could it be that the original was an encrypted filesystem?

Which platform are you backing-up? windows 2000, WIndows 2003, NT 4.0, Samba? CIFS Filer?
