hi,
is it possible to restore a tape from serverA to serverB without having a catalog backup?
thanks

Are you saying that you can't do a catalog backup on Server A?

server A has crashed and i only have a full backup tape to restore to server B.
any help?

I am sorry I don't have time to give a detailed explanation, but what you are looking for is to use the "bpimport" command to import media.
In the past, I have successfully restored backups from tape when I had no catalog tape, and this was the means to do so.

Searching for "bpimport" or "import media" on the Veritas website should steer you in the right direction.

Note: I did this under NetBackup Data Center 3.4; I don't know if it works with earlier or later versions, or what you are running.
Good luck..

FredTheCat, can you give me the details of how to do it when you have the time?
thanks

Here is an excerpt from a recovery doc I used back in 2001.
It is an internal document and some parts might not apply to your configuration (i.e. type of tape drive/library, O/S, etc.) but hopefully it is a good example to use as a template.

Note that we first try to recover the catalog, as it is MUCH faster, but then the document covers how to recover catalog information by importing images from the actual backup tapes.
Hope this helps; let me know if any parts need clarification.

 Enable debug logging by creating the following directories:
 install_path\NetBackup\logs\tar
 install_path\NetBackup\logs\bpinetd
(Note: the reference to "install_path" is the home directory for Veritas on your system. )
 Start the NetBackup Client service and NetBackup Device Manager and stop all other NetBackup services using the NetBackup Activity Monitor or the Services application in the Windows NT/2000 Control Panel.
 Use the bprecover command to recover the NetBackup catalogs. In our case, the catalog information will typically be found on a tape with a label starting with "CAT" such as "CAT135"
 To list the catalogs on a tape :
install_path\NetBackup\bin\admincmd bprecover -l -m CAT135
To restore the catalogs from a tape:
install_path\NetBackup\bin\admincmd bprecover -r all -m CAT135 -v
 When catalog recovery is complete, start the NetBackup services that are not already running using the Activity Monitor or the Services application in the Windows NT/2000 Control Panel.
 If the catalog recovery fails (cannot find or read a catalog), you can manually import the catalogs from tape. Warning: This process can take upwards of 1 hour per 80 GB tape.
 To recover catalogs manually:
 Start all of the NetBackup services using the Services tab of the activity monitor.
 On the NetBackup Administration screen, click <Images><Import> .
 Change the date/time range to go back at least a month, preferably set it several months back.
 Click on <New>.
 In the "Read catalog info from a new media" window, select a media host and type in the media ID of the tape you want to import.
 Click <OK>
 Click on the <Results> button and monitor the progress of the import.
 You may need to display the Device Monitor and confirm if there are any pending requests for a tape to be mounted. If there are, confirm the tape is in the drive, right-click on the request and click <Resubmit Request>.
 The second step of the import uses the results of the above. Close the results window, and return to the "Import Images" window.
 In the "Media ID" field, you should now be able to select the label from a pick list when you click on the arrow. Once you have selected your media, click <Search>.
 From the list that is displayed, select some or all of the images on that media, and start the import.
 Repeat this procedure for every tape that you wish to restore from.

 Restoring all other files than the catalog:
Do not restore files to the install_path\NetBackup\db or install_path\Volmgr\database directories. These directories were recovered during the bprecover operation and overwriting them with regular backups will leave the catalogs in an inconsistent state.
 Start the NetBackup Administration interface on the master server.
 Start the Backup, Archive, and Restore utility.
 Browse for restores and select all partitions.
 If you are restoring to the exact same server or type of server, it is important to select the system directory (typically C:\Winnt). This ensures that all registry files are restored. Do not select this if moving to a different hardware platform.
 Deselect the install_path\NetBackup\db or install_path\Volmgr\database directories (see the caution above).
 Select the Overwrite existing files option. This ensures that existing files are replaced with the backups.
