We have a sql7 server on nt4 server, i have taken a backup of the main database, and have got a 2GB .trn file, i was expecting to get a .BAK file..

I have installed another server with sql7, and then tried to restore the backup, ie the .trn file, but it does not restore. how am i supposed to restore a .trn file.

many thanks

Many Thanks

SQL Server 7 uses the .trn extension for its backup files. How are you trying to restore it? Can you provide the command and errors?

Another possibility is that you didn't backup the database and instead you backed up the log file.

i am pretty new this sql server, the way that i backed it up was to right click on the db name is enterprise manager, the select backup.

to restore it was to create a db of the same name, then right click on it, and do restore, point it to the backup that file that i had created in the previous step.

will get you the error message asap..

Many Thanks

on the options tab, if i select the force option..

then the error message that i get is ::

the file database.mdf cannot be used by RESTORE. consider ising the WITH MOVE option to identify a valid location for the file

backup or restore operation terminating abnormally

Many Thanks

you need to change the restore as path in the restore wizard as well as force restore.

When you are restoring a database, you don't need to create a blank one with the same name. It's best if the database does not exist. So drop the empty database and then try the restore.

not sure what you mean, could you please step me through the process of restoring the .trn file

Many Thanks

You say you already have created the database. That should not have been done for a restore. Delete the empty database that you created. Then do a restore.

Hi,

I managed to do it, what happened was that, the location that the system chose by default did not exist, when i changed it to the root of the data drive, it just worked a dream.

Thanks to all you people for helping me on this, its feels so nice to know that there are still folk out there that will help you out.

wish you all the best..

Many Thanks
