is there a command to restore on an NT machine to a previous date?

I think you may be in the wrong forum BUT if this question is being poised to the use of SQL Server backups ... Then YES ... you can restore to a point in time if the proper backup steps are in place.

Thanks

can an iso be taken? is that how somethings can be backed up? also, If i do a backup, SQL2k on a NT machine, using NT's backup feature, can I extract only certain folder/files/aspects from the backed copy?

thanks J

To the last part of your question - Nope. SQL Server backups are pretty much all or nothing. An NT backup of SQL Server will not work unless the databases are detached or the SQL Server is offline.

To the first part - what's an ISO?

Hey Bill ...

CD/DVD image files are called ISO files.

Thanks

J. Kusch

Thanks Jay I learned something new.

2cxc,

You COULD backup to cd/dvd, but I wouldn't recommend it. If you have to, the best procedure would probably be to use SQL Server's backup commands to backup to hard drive and then copy those files to cd/dvd.

i tried using 'backup database' in enterprise manager and it would not instigate, also when i clicken on the db server and selected properties i got this error:
Code:
a connection could not be established to server_name

reason general network error, check your network documentation
ConnectionRead(recv())...

please verify SQL server is running and check your SQL server registration properties
\

in the reg properties i have use windows authentication and i have checked:
-Display server state in console
-Show system database and system objects
-auto start sql server when connecting

1. Are you doing this on the SQL Server computer or from a remote computer?

2. In Enterprise Manager, expand down to Security. Expand that. Click on Logins. Find your login and double click on it. On the General tab, what type of authentication does it show your login is set to use?

3. Is the network up?

4. Try to PING the SQL Server from your computer by name and then by IP Address if the name doesn't work.

1) onthe server computer, not from remote
2) when i try to expand down from the consol root i get an error when i try to expand on the server:

connection failed.... check SQL server registration properties

3) what do you mean...

4)i went on the webserver and pinged the sql serve and it worked by name and by ip

3. ignore this one as you are using the SQL Server computer.

2. Have you ever registered the SQL Server in Enterprise Manager? If not, do so. If you have, delete the registration and re-register the server.

This error is interesting because you shouldn't be getting a 'network' error since you are on the same computer that SQL Server is on. This error normally only happens when SQL Server is on one machine and you are using another one.
