Several months ago I had a corrupt database and per CA's advice, I had to start over with a blank database. Now I need to restore a file from an old tape that would have been in my old database. I'm not sure what to do in this case. How would I restore a file from an old backup tape that is not in my current media pool? I'm used to using the restore by session and of course the tape is not listed.

I am using ArcServe 2000.

Any suggestions would be appreciated!

Thanks!
Lynne

You can either use the MERGE facility to merge the tape back into the database or perform a restore based on a filter (no database required).

The merge will take as long as it needs to scan the entire contents of the tape, usually the same length of time the backup takes.

The restore by filter allows you to specify a path/file type to restore (for example if you wanted to restore all DLL files under C:\WINNT, you would set a directory filter of C:\WINNT and a file filter of *.DLL). This can take as long as the merge, and will work providing you have the filters correct.

I would recommend the merge. -----------------------------------------------------

Thank you for the tip. The MERGE facility worked great. I never used that utility before.

Thanks again!

If I remember correctly, all I had to do was stop the ArcServe services (mainly the database service) and rename the database folder under the ArcServe folder. Recreate the database folder and CA emailed me a zipped file which contained the necessary files to place in the new database folder.

Hi,

You can start a new database by the following method:

If NetWare:

1. Unload Arcserve
2. Rename the database dir.
3. Recreate it.
4. Copy all databases from emptydb dir into database dir.

If Windows:

You need to stop services and Reinitialize the database. Not sure how since I never did it, but have heard many do it.
