I have been tasked with restoring a backup from a S2K system onto another machine which may or may not have been patched with different service packs.
I would expect the data to go over without incident, but I am concerned that I may end up restoring system tables that are 'no good' for a later version.

Can anyone tell me a good strategy for this, or offer any advice?
Urgent because I have to travel 200 miles to do the job in the morning.. ;)

Probably won't work. Everything I have seen so far shows that you must restore to a system with the same collation and service pack as the original.

I could be wrong, but that's the conclusion I've come to after seeing other posts from people doing similar restores.

wrong answer ;), but helpful nonetheless.
have a star..

So you got it to work? Did it go well? Any insights you can post that might help others?

Thanks for the star, even though I didn't really deserve it this time.

I got it to work but only because luckily we were both on the same version.
By 'wrong answer' I meant 'not what I was hoping for' :)
Your post helped me to stop and take stock of the situation without just restoring the data and keeping my fingers crossed.

And stars are for being helpful just as much as for being 'exceptional', in my opinion.
