Hi all,

I need to know how to restore from tape a mksysb.
The live server has 4 drives 72GB each and 2 vg rootvg and datavg on different mirrors.
My new server has 2 x 146GB drives so I need to mirror them in to one big 146GB disk and restore the 2 vg's to this.

How do I do this with mksysb?

Thanks

Since you have only two disks and that needs to be in mirror, both the disks has to be part of the same Volume Group.
So the simple method is..

Backup mksysb
Backup the filesystems in datavg using "backup" command
Restore mksysb on to new server
Create the filesystems manually in the rootvg
Restore the filesystems using restore command

Just what Harry said. mksysb only backs up your rootvg!
You have to back up your live server using mksysb
restore that mksysb to the new server
mirror the two disks
Create new filesystems on the new server (the ones in the datavg of your live server)
Then you can copy the data over the network (if your data is not that big) or you can backup the data to tape using the backup command and restore them to your new server.

Keep in mind that it is always a better practice to keep your data on a seperate vg than rootvg! So your initial setup might perform better if your datavg was being used more often!

Regards,
Khalid

Also keep in mind that if the mksysb was made on mirrored rootvg it will be restored mirrored, so it should be restored on 2 disks.

Thanks for your advice,

Unfortunately the restore from the mksysb hangs after loading the kernel on a block screen, I believe this to be the green just before where you normal get asked to press F1 to continue install.

I think this is due to either the bosinst.data or image.data files on the tape.

I can not use a floppy disk for alternate data files, so this leaves me with more questions.

I have a basic OS install on my DR server, so is there a way to restore the rootvg data over the top?

Please can you advise, how this could be done, would there be a problem with files pointing to the old disks / hardware?
