Let me start by stating, this is my first time working with oracle.

I have a client who has provided me with what appears to be a file backup of one of their source systems. The backup contains multiple directories and files Directories include ARCHIVE LOGS, Findata, database control file. Within the Archive Logs are multiple .arc files. Within the Database Control File directory is a .bak file within the Findata and other files are a number of dbf files. My question is how do I go about restoring their DB to a server in my office.

MDXer,

Welcome to The Oracle World. I hope you will find solutions here.

First, if your customer really did send you all of her/his database files, you can get this assemblage to work, but I would certainly not recommend pinning hopes on success if this is your first foray into Oracle. This is a task that I would not recommend to experienced, faint-of-heart DBAs.

The easiest (and least risky) method to load your customer's data into your database is for her/him to "exp" (export) the schema(s) that they want you to have, then you "imp" (import) the dump file that they send you. We do that sort of thing all the time with great success.

If, however, you must use what they have already sent you, then:

1) the risks will be higher,
2) the explanation of what you must do is more complex, and
3) the time that it will require to answer all of your questions will certainly be tedious via this medium.

If this is your only option, and if time is of the essence, then I am willing to step you through the process and answer your questions (gratis) by your contacting me via my signature, below. Your responsibility, should you decide to go this route, would be to write up the resolution and post it here so that that others can benefit from what you discover.

Let us know.

Dave,

Thank you for taking the time to reply. Your post confirmed my suspiscions. I am having one of my Deelopers document the process to export so we can import, and we are going to push this back to the clients to provide it this way. Unfortunately from what I have been told they are even less knowledable than I am.
