Hi there,

I have just purchased a new server and I am willing to migrate my actual configuration from FC2 to FC3.
Having done a tar backup of /etc, is it possible to restore the tar backup from FC2 onto the new server running FC3?

If possible, is that all i need to do in order to restore users, groups, passwords, iptables, sendmail and smb config?

I am pretty sure it will work for iptables, sendmail and samba but not too sure of this will restore exaclty all users, groups and passwords.

Thanks a lot

I think you'd be better served to migrate from FC2 to FC3 on the old box. Then either (1) move the hard drive to the new box or (2) make the old hard drive secondary on the new box and use "dd" from old to new drive to apply the whole FC3.

I don't think /etc is sufficient to ensure success since a lot of stuff can end up in /home, /var/spool, /usr/local, and all sorts of odd places, including hidden files.

smb should be OK, but not sure on the changelog for sendmail, as for users and passwords, if you carefull extract these from /etc/passwd and /etc/shadow and ensure that no uids overlap, you should be able to append them directly to the new files without issue, obviuolsy taking /home with you would help but you could end up with issues reagrding any versions of gnome/kde/icewm and any terminal and environment changes from FC2 to FC3 .
