I apologize for this, but how do you restore a file from the deleted/purgable files on NW?

When I attempt to recover files via the Salvage File utility is shows no files available.

Is the purge immediate atribute set on the volume in question?

The purge immediate is not set. Is there a way to see the available (recoverable) files via the novell console. I am attempting to recover via XP (right click on the drive, click salvage files).

Was it just a file that was deleted or an entire directory?
Either way, confirm that it was actually deleted and not accidentally moved.

Being moved instead of deleted is a very possible scenerio and may be the case. In any event is there a way to see what files are available for recovery either through Novell natively or through a utility (iManager or whatnot)?

The Salvage utility you are using will show any files that can be recovered.

There is also a 'purgable' attribute that is set on all NSS volumes. You access this through NSSMU at the server console. If that flag is set, you won't be able to salvage anything. While you may wonder why you'd want to set that, it's common for volumes holding GroupWise or other database applications that generate lots of temp files.

When you salvage a file/folder from an NSS volume, you have to be at the folder level where the item was deleted. You can't just do it from the root of the volume, it won't do it. So it's imperative that you know where the files were supposed to be when you're trying to salvage them.

And I've seen GB's of data accidentally moved by a simple accidental mouse drag/drop. So look in other closeby folders, they might not have been deleted at all. Moved files won't show up in the salvage unless you've moved them to new volumes and actually deleted the files from the volume as part of the process.

I did locate the files as they were moved and not deleted, however up till then I hadn't had to even look at recovering a file, I've purged files but never recovered, most of the time files had to be restored from backup.

It's a bit ironic how the simplest of things can turn into a raging pain.

Thanks to all for your much valued assistance.
