Hi there,

i have a customer with a BCM 2.5 FTR. Now he get a new BCM System 3.7... Is there any chance to make a restore of the Telephony Data like phones and mailboxes? If i try he start but end with failures and nothing is set up like it should... any idea?

regards,

subx

The restore won't work from one release to another, the exception being from 3.0 to 3.01. You'll need to program the new system as if it were a new install.

If you try to force the restore through (by checking the "restore even if the versions are different" box in BRU), you'll be left with a paper weight as you'll need to reimage the hard drive to resolve the issue.

thx for ur response..... thats the same answer that nortel told me lately... but they also told me that BCM 1000 Backups are not compatible with BCM 400 or BCM 200 Backups... Anyways does anybody know how an upgrade work if u have a BCM 1000 with 8GB HD and u get a 20GB HD?

regards,

subx

if you planning on using the same platform and just changing the HDD ... all you need are the keycodes

swap the preloaded nortel supplied HDD
upgrade PECs as required
may require init of the system
re-enter keycodes
reprogram (or restore from same version)

If you're upgrading from 2.5 to 3.0, you can order an upgrade kit that includes the 20GB drive. The upgrade process will migrate your data from one drive to the other. Once at 3.0, you can upgrade to 3.6. Unfortunately, to go to 3.7, you need to be at release 3.5 first. I haven't seen any compelling reasons to go to 3.7 unless you want the color IP phone support, digital mobility, or need to internetwork with a Succession 4.5 system.

If you don't care about the voicemail/IP programming, you can do as senk1s suggests and change the HD. You'll need to initialize the system to update the MSC code, so you'll be reprogramming telephony as well as VM/keycodes/IP(universal profile didn't show up until release 3.0).

BCM's shipped with 8 GB hard drives are either 1.0 2.0 or 2.5 versions.
You may upgrade to 3.0 or 3.01 by replacing the drive and re-entering keycodes. However to upgrade to 3.5 or higher from 2.x you must first replace drive with 20 GB drive such as a 3.0 FRU and then upgrade to the latest version.
The 3.0 to 3.5 upgrade process upgrades the bios on the motherboard to support 3.5.
Therefore you may not upgrade from 2.x to 3.5 or greater simply by replacing the drive as the BCM applications will not boot.

It worked for me in a lab - The BIOS should update as part of the initialization process which happens after you run a universal profile or initialize the device after replacing the hard drive.

thx again for all that information..... but i still stuck on this.... I have a new BCM 3.7 without any keycodes and the old BCM 2.5 ... I tried to switch the MSC to the new BCM 3.7 and everything worked fine... I could also reenter the old keycodes ... But as soon as i tried to change something in telephony i get the message "telephony service not available... Pls try again later"... As long as i waited or how many reboots i did... it keep on printing that message... i could see the MSC ID and also the PEC but cant change anything in media bay module... i even couldnt start quick start wizard again ... any idea so i can use the old keycodes or whats wrong with msc 1a from BCM 2.5 in new bcm 3.7?

Did you initialise the universal profile?

I would log in via the serial port and run through the initialisation procedure. If you do not have the correct serial cable. You could enable the telnet server and telnet into the system.

The system will prompt for a username,Domain name and password.

Username ee_admin
Domain
Password PlsChgMe!

Select 1 for Platform Initialisation Menu.

Select 1 for Initialize Menu.

Select 1 for Initialize Universal Profile

The Profile process will then check to see what load is currently on the MSC card.

After about 2 minutes the screen will prompt you to select the MSC Core

Select Profile applicable to you. The BCM will reload with the new profile this can take up to 90 mins. During this time the BCM will reboot a number of times

Hope this makes sense.

thx very much marshall !!!

so do i need always to initialize MSC card if its different BCM Releases? Will i loose my programming on BCM or is it just like a firmware upload for the MSC?

regards,

subx

You will lose you programming on the telephone side.

marshal this is cool.
I tried replacing a 3.0 drive with a 3.5 and the system was just goofy would not boot and stuff (technical description :)
Nortel tech support :( told me it was completely impossible to replace a 3.0 with a 3.5 drive as the bios was upgraded during the upgrade process to 3.5. I tossed in a 3.0 drive after the failed upgrade and later upgraded to 3.5.

I'm miffed on all this cross-information. I too am trying to upgrade a BCM 2.5 FP1 MR1 to a 3.7. I too have taken other systems and simply put in a 3.6 drive, done the initialization and re-entered keycodes & reprogrammed. No problem, both units are out there working away. I can't say for sure but I think both were initially 2.5's although I currently have some 2.03 etc, that I will likely take the extra steps of migrating to 2.5 FP1 MR1 before doing a drive switch to upgrade. Currently I'm concerned about the 2.5>3.7? Should I upgrade to the 3.6 by swapping the drive, initializing and then swapping it to a 3.7? My supplier has 3.7 drives and says he's switched them with no problem, however it sounds like subx is suffering some. Have you gotten past them subx?

hi together...

The problem got solved... or however u wanna call that :p
we did open a case to nortel about it and there is finaly no soloution for upgrading a BCM 1000 2.5 to BCM 400 3.7!
If u try to order an upgrade for such a system u will get a complete new BCM 400 rel. 3.7 and have to do reprogramming the system by hand... its not supported to go from BCM 1000 to BCM 400 cause hardware has changed and thats why u cant also dont upgrade and use database of 2.5 to 3.7 ... If u have an system with 20GB harddrives already u can upgrade step by step to 3.7 but u cant use that harddisk for bcm 400 if the old system is a bcm 1000.... u also need to upgrade step by step that u dont loose database cause... i noticed crazy things could happen if u use an old backup with new system release....
thats all i can tell u for now ;O)

regards,

subx

You can't upgrade a BCM 1000 to a BCM 400, as they are 2 different box's. But you can upgrade a 2.5 to a 3.7. I have upgraded 10 BCM 1000 2.5 FP1 to 3.6, I don't see any advantage in upgrading them to 3.7. I have done both incremental upgrades from 2.5 to 3.01 and then to 3.6 and also stright Harddrive replacement with a 3.6 drive. The only problem I have seen with the 3.6 HD replacement is the Modem doesn't work. This probakky could be fixed by installing the correct driver, but I never use the Modem's.
