Question: I've taken a volume group (dataVG) backup using IBM AIX system backup (SysBack) via smit. Question is if I were to restore using this VG backup, do I need manually remove all the directories/files in the VG, then do the restore and everything gets rebuild (or) do I just do the restore and directories/files get overlayed with data from the backup tape ??

Data will get overlaid. Keep in mind though, that you'll need an amount of free space equal to the size of your largest single file. Once the entire file is copied from tape, it will overwrite the existing file.

Actually, after thinking about it, the statement

"Keep in mind though, that you'll need an amount of free space equal to the size of your largest single file. Once the entire file is copied from tape, it will overwrite the existing file."

may not actually be true.
