Restore from a Exchange 2003 mail store?

We have been running Exchange 2010 for about a year now. We may have a need to restore a mailbox from 2006. This would be in a Server 2003 mail store. Even if I could get the old tape drive hooked up to a server and get backup exec to read the tape, I have reservations about trying to restore data from it. I worry that by trying to restore information from the 2003 system into the 2010 system, it may whack our 2010 mailstore. Is this a valid concern or am I just being over cautious? Has anyone tried anything like this before?

Thanks in advance.

You can't restore directly from EX2003 to EX2010, EX2003 databases are not transportable.

Best although not cheapest bet is to get yourself a tool like Kroll Ontrack PowerControls or Quest Recovery Manager for Exchange which can interface directly with Backup Exec.
They'll then dump out the streamed backup to a .EDB & .STM file plus logs and allow you to export the individual mailbox to a PST.
