Restore Exchange Store to a different server 1

Let me explain what happened.

I had an SBS2003 R2 server running in my house that i ended up selling to a client. I backed up exchange using NTBACKUP and i rebult a NON R2 server and I am trying to restore the Exchange data base and i am getting some nasty messages.

Does anyone know if this possiable.

I was running Exchange SP2 before the backup and before the restore.

Your domain/org settings are supposed to match those of the originating Exchange server before you can do a successful restore. And I haven't even scratched the surface yet. Read through this document and become familiar with it, it will shape your attitude towards backups:

One of the requirements is that you have a full file backup of the original server. If you are trying to rebuild the whole Exchange system, just showing up at the party with a backup of the database isn't enough.

I know it's written for Exchange 2000, but all the same principles apply. Microsoft hasn't updated it for 2003 because its still so applicable.

I only had a few emails on that backup anyway. Is there anyway to restore exchange back to its original state?

Since i treid to restore the exchange database i can't mount it. I did not back it up before i tried the restore. I know i should have done my homework but its a server for my house so i decided to give it a wack. Am i better of re-formating and re-installing sbs all over again?

Yeah, I'd say you were better off starting over, if you really care about R2. My personal opinion is that R2 doesn't do much that's important for SBS 2003, so you may just want to work with what you've got there.

Thats what i figured.

Is there any way to get exchange back its origianl install state?

I'd guess that you could rerun the SBS setup (look in Add/Remove Programs) and remove and re-add the Exchange component.

You could also use some third party tools to pull the email out of the unmounted .edb files and put them into .pst files. You could then exmerge those .pst files into your new server.
