I am going to rebuild a 2000 Server shortly.

I backup the System State as part of the backup each day.

When I restore this will all my DNS entries automatically get restored ?

Thanks

L

I don't believe DNS is part of System State. Let me verify.

Assuming you have more then 1 DC, then as long as your DNS zone is AD-Integrated then you don't need to restore the zone on the new server, it will replicate automatically when you setup DNS on the new server

Unless, of course, there is only one DNS server. Right?

..........there's only one DNS server !

I'd just back up the zone files. Look in system32\dns.

If it's "Active-Directory Integrated", then first change it to "Standard Primary". The zone file name will be shown on the properties page.

Never tried it myself, but on the new server you should be able to just set up the zone as Standard Primary with the same file name, stop the service, copy the old zone file, and restart the service. I'm not sure you need to stop/start the service, but it's normally needed.
