Good Day Everyone.

Ok, I have an IBM ThinkCentre and an IBM Lenovo Desktops.

The ThinkCentre:

PS/2 Ports
USB Ports
Windows XP SP3 Professional

The Lenovo

USB PORTS ONLY
Windows XP SP2 Professional

Ok, so the ThinkCentre is a working computer on our network, it belongs to one of two finance people. These two people work with specific finance software, that one is a tremendous pain to install and two, very touchy to updates.

I used Norton Ghost 14 to take an image of the ThinkCentre. I thought it would be good to have this back up in case of failure and it was good practice for me to know how to do this.

For those curious, it was quite simple once I took my time read the manual and poke around the GUI. I backed up the image to an external USB HDD. Then I connected the USB to the Lenevo and using the supplied Symantec Disk Recovery Boot CD, I went through the process and in less then 45 minutes to move some 18 GB of data it was finished. It appears to have worked. My issue now is that the Lenevo does not have PS/2 ports, it only has USB ports. I boot the Lenevo it gets to the Windows log on screen but my USB mouse or keyboard (only option, NO PS/2) do not respond. Upon boot up the keyboard does work and allows me into BIOS, where the USB devices are enabled. Any suggestions?

Thank you in advance.

UPDATE:

I took the SATA drive from the Lenevo and installed it in the ThinkCentre as the Primary. This booted and it still did not recognize the USB, so I used a PS/2 keyboard, which allowed me to log in to Windows and then run through the wizards to add new hardware both USB Mouse and Keyboard. Now the drivers and all the software should be installed on this HDD. So, I remove the HDD from the ThinkCentre and reinstall it as primary on the Lenevo. Same problem as before, the USB keyboard works in BIOS and F8 for Safe Mode, but no matter what it won't let me log on, as when it gets to Windows the USB mouse and keyboard don't work. The Lenevo has NO PS/2 ports.
So I take the SATA HDD from the Lenevo and again install it into the ThinkCentre, however when I get to the logon screen for windows, the USB Keyboard and Mouse do not work. They should they were installed on this machine on this drive with these devices. Huh? So, turn down, remove USB keyboard, install PS/2 and restart the ThinkCentre. The Windows logon screen, no USB mouse, but I can use the PS/2 keyboard to logon. Again, the OS asks to run the wizard for new hardware finding the USB mouse. Why would it need to do it a second time, it has already installed this mouse? So, I do that, and add the USB keyboard again running the wizard.
So, I figure if I can the SATA HDD back into the Lenevo and get past the logon screen the USB can be installed. Ok, before I remove the HDD from the ThinkCentre, I hack the registry to auto logon.
Now my thinking,
I can install this SATA HDD Back into the Lenevo (No PS/2 Ports)
It will auto logon getting me past the logon screen
Windows will recognize the USB devices and I will be all set.
WRONG
I still need to run the wizards and with no input devices working, I am stuck! Any help would be very appreciated.

Thanks everyone!

I've found that when using USB keyboard and mouse, and changing any configuration or moving anything, the keyboard and mouse do not work when first starting up XP. But after waiting a few minutes to allow the OS to find these components they will again light up and work.

The work in BIOS, but not in XP until found by the OS. Then they are fine until the next time of change.

Give them a few minutes to acknowledge.

Regards,
David.

It's a bit difficult to determine, but it appears you've made one serious faulty assumption: you cannot use the same image for two different machines unless the hardware is IDENTICAL, which I doubt is the case here.

Please list the model numbers of the ThinkCentre and Lenovo PCs. Note that IBM has sold its consumer PC division to Lenovo, and they are now totally different companies.
