In a scenrio where the only dc in the domain was destroyed, would it be possible to restore AD from a system state backup to different hardware? Is a systen state backup of any use when the hardware it was backed up from is destroyed?

You could also promote the server to a domain controller using the backup media and then seize the FSMO roles.

Thanks for the tips. in regard to flodiggs suggestion, I am not sure what you mean by this. In this scenario, the only server in the domain was destroyed and the customer will purchase new hardware. Would it be neccesary to seize fsmo roles after succesfully restoring the dc to new hardware? Has any tried the method as suggested by porkchopexpress? Just wondering what the success rate is.
