we have a 4.2.1 os running in our rs/6000 machine ... can we restore a filesystem using our mksysb for example /var and /tmp?

Thanks in advance ..

hi, you can.

Open a terminal and set your current directory
under a filesystem that can contain restored data:

(eg. /home/restore or /home/temp )

don't use /home ot /tmp as filesystem,
but if you have not,
create a scratch fs as /home/restore , mount it and cd there.

From there enter "smitty backsys" and choose
"Restore Files in a System Image"

Press F4 for the 1st field and choose the tape(eg /dev/rmt0)
Go in the 2nd field, press F1, and read doc.

Remeber that files/or directory must be entered in exact way:
no wildcards are allowed;
in backup archives, files are listed in the form:

./tmp
./tmp/myfile
.

Than, if you want restore /tmp from tape put ./tmp

If you want be sure of the format, before "Restore...",
you can use "List Files ..." ; leave run the command, then
you can see the output or on video, or at the tail of
/smit.log file

bye

ok thanks for reply I appreciate it ..

jie: also you can do the same by hand (simple terminal commands without SMIT).

Load the mksysb tape, and move forward to the 4. file on the tape:
mt -f /dev/rmt0 fsf 3

And then use restore command to restore files from the backup format archive of rootvg.

(also you can play with SMIT stuff and check out /smit.script afterwards, to see what commands did SMIT run.
