I stupidly deleted MS Works the other day. I went to restore but the only restore point was the time and date of the deletion. (I will set restore points in the future). Is there a way to retrieve Works? I am in the middle of writing a grant and Wordpad does not cut it. Thanks in advance.

Have you tried selecting a restore point from another date? Usually, Windows XP creates a system restore point every 24 hours. Try using a restore from yesterday's date or a date prior to when you uninstalled MS Works.

Hope this helps.

PBP07,
I found only the one restore date and time. I tried to move backward on the calendar and could not either by day or month. I admit I am not particularly familiar with the restore function. Perhaps there is something I do not understand? I appreciate your quick reply and will hope for more info.

Did you delete it or uninstall it?

If you uninstalled it then you will have to install it again. Even if System Restore was working properly it would not have saved everything during an uninstall.

"System Restore monitors a core set of system and application files, recording and sometimes copying states of these files before changes are made. Monitored files include those that are not in excluded directories (My Documents) and that do not have known data file extensions (such as .doc). System Restore automatically creates restore points; no user intervention is required. To create a restore point, System Restore takes a full snapshot of the registry and some dynamic system files. For a list of file extension types, which are included (monitored and restored), refer to the Monitored File Extensions list in the System Restore section of the Platform SDK."

If you just deleted the Program folder then your chances of recovery are slightly improved, but not greatly. See the following thread.

Forget Works:
AbiWord is an excellent stand alone Word program and is free the download size is 4.78 MB about 10mins on dialup connection......I use XP Office so don`t need it, but downloaded just the same to check it out....I think will do all what you want and more........Very much doubt if you will find anything (FREE) better than this!!

And another (Even smaller download 760kb) Atlantis which is also excellent you can get from here:

Thank you all for the guidance. I tried some of the restore downloads with no success. I am currently downloading the abiword program that was suggested and will work with it for awhile.
I very much appreciate the answers from everyone. I have been to this site twice and both times was supplied with great information. I am so glad it is here!

You`re welcome let us know how you get on with Abiword?
